Dubrovnik – Korčula – Split (7 days)

Day 1

Flying to Dubrovnik-Transfer to Hotel-Sightseeing-Overnight

Sightseeing: The spectacular Stradun–also known in Dubrovnik as Placa; beautiful Dubrovnik Cathedral was designed in Baroque style by Andrea Buffalini of Rome; Pile Gate has served as the main entrance and is still the most interesting access point to this fabulous old city; Loggia Square in Dubrovnik has long been a central gathering point for citizens and visitors alike. Featuring some of Dubrovnik’s most famous buildings and public monuments, this former market square is found in the northeast section of the old city center. Highlights include Orlando’s Column, built and designed by sculptor Antonio Ragusino, as well as the famous Loggia of the Bells, dating from 1480, the Church of St. Blaise, a clock tower from the 15th century; the main guardhouse; the small fountain of Onofrio; and Sponza Palace; Fort Lovrijenac–also known as St. Lawrence Fortress–has long been one of Croatia’s most important fortresses. Located on the city wall system, the impressive Minceta Tower… There’s more to do in Dubrovnik than simply sightseeing. This historic city is in fact home to Banje Beach, widely regarded as one of the top beaches in Croatia. Overnight in Dubrovnik.

Supplement (not included in price):

The old city walls of Dubrovnik are one of its best-known features, now more than ever thanks to being featured in the hit TV series, Game of Thrones. Built in the 10th century and modified in the 13th and 14th centuries, these formidable walls–as high as six meters in places, and up to six meters thick–provided a solid defense against invaders. Totaling nearly two kilometers in length, Dubrovnik’s city walls make a great spot for a casual stroll and offer numerous excellent views over the Adriatic and inwards over the old city center.

Another fun thing to do when visiting Dubrovnik is to head to the hills–via cable car. The Dubrovnik Cable Car whisks visitors high above the Old Town, up Srd Hill, with the views only getting better and better as you climb (on clear days, it’s said you can see for some 50 kilometers). The journey lasts less than 10 minutes, and once deposited at the top, you’re free to explore the area.

Day 2

Traveling to Korčula island by catamaran-Sightseeing-Overnight

Sightseeing – Korčula Town on the Korčula island: The entrance to the Old Town is through the Land Gate at the southern end. The gate’s front is covered by a triumphal arch built in honor of commander Leonardo Foscolo, who was instrumental in the defense of Dalmatia during the 17th century. Above this gate is also the Revelin tower which you can partially climb up for some scenic views. There is another entrance to the Old Town to its west – the Sea Gate. Almost bang in the center of the Old Town, St Mark’s Cathedral was built in the 15th & 16th centuries. It has a statue of St Mark above its entrance with figures of Adam and Eve on either side. Inside the Cathedral is a ciborium over the main altar by Marko Andrijic, a gifted local stonemason. Below this lies a restored Tintoretto, with another piece – The Annunciation – in the southern nave of the Cathedral. Overnight in Korčula Town.

Supplement (not included in price):

Marco Polo’s House (Kuca Marka Pola) – Korcula claims to be the birthplace of merchant and traveler Marco Polo; if he was not born in Korcula (Venice has always been the main place to call Marco Polo its son, although officially it’s still somewhat of a mystery), then he certainly was prominent in the local area and surrounding seas.

Day 3

Beach day

Beach dayThe Vela Przina Beach in Lumbarda is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Korcula Island and fascinates with a particularly idyllic ambiance, surrounded by Lumbarda’s vineyards. This wonderful long and gently sloping sandy beach is especially popular for families with children. In the season, a small restaurant and a beach bar are opened right on the beach. Also, massages with a sea view are offered there. This bay has only a few natural shade spots, but beach chairs and umbrellas can be rented. If you are looking for a really lovely sandy beach on Korcula, then the Vela Przina Beach in Lumbarda is the place to visit.

Another great tip among the best beaches of Korcula is the fantastic beach of Bacva Bay. This dream beach is just amazing, and the water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Behind the cozy beach, there is a small quaint restaurant, that grills fresh fish every day and from the terrace, you will enjoy a wonderful beach atmosphere. Especially if you live near Lumbarda and Korcula town then Bacva Beach is really worth a visit. Overnight in Korčula Town.

The Mercy of Sir Fitzroy Maclean

Andrea’s version of this story goes that prominent British soldier, Fitzroy Maclean was given direct orders by Winston Churchill to bomb Korčula as part of WWII’s effort in Yugoslavia. Whilst flying over Korčula, Maclean thought it too beautiful to demolish so passed on by. Later, as thanks for his mercy, the ancient Croatian law that disallows foreigners to buy property on Korčula was amended for one day so that Maclean could buy a family house there. He died in 1996, not only with an impressive canon of work attached to his name but also an intriguing rumor: it is highly speculated that Ian Fleming used Fitzroy Maclean as inspiration when creating James Bond. The Maclean family still owns the house on Korčula and visits annually.

Day 4

Sightseeing – Wine tour – Korčula island

A wine tasting tour is a perfect way to learn more about wines from Korcula and to conveniently visit some of the best wineries on the island. We can introduce you to some of the island’s best wines.

You can also incorporate other fun activities into your tours such as a walk around the vineyards, a scenic cycle ride, or a boat trip. With over 40,000 winemakers in Croatia, Korcula has its fair share of excellent local wines. The island is best known for its white wines, but you’ll find delicious reds as well. The majority of wineries on Korcula Island are family-owned and have been passed down through the generations, some for as long as 300 years. Most of the vineyards are located in Lumbarda, Smokvica & Cara.

Lumbarda – There are 8 official Grk wine producers in Lumbarda. Our Wine Tasting Tours in Lumbarda visit the best family-run Grk producers. Our self-guided cycling tour to Lumbarda from Korcula Town includes helpful information about where to visit the wineries. Throughout the summer the island hosts several wine festivals. This is a great opportunity to taste some local wines. Korcula Town hosts a White Wine-Black Island evening which showcases all wines from the island. In Lumbarda, there are three Grk wine nights where you can taste wines from all the producers.

One of the most famous “symbols” of Korcula is the famous Moreska sword dance. Meaning “Moorish”, the dance used to depict the battle between the Moors and the Christians, although today is shown as a battle between a White King or Emperor and his followers (who are actually all dressed in red) and a Black King or Emperor, who has kidnapped the bride of the White King. The two leaders’ armies do “battle”, accompanied by music until the Black King surrenders. Performed weekly during summer, it is well worth a watch.

Dinner included. Overnight in Korčula town.

Day 5

Traveling from Korčula island to Split by catamaran-Sightseeing-overnight in Split

Sightseeing – Split: The spectacular Diocletian’s Palace (Dioklecijanova palača) is a well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage Site built in Roman military camp style, and a visit here is one of the top things to do in Split; The Cathedral of St. Domnius (Katedrala Sv. Duje) can also be found within the ancient area of Diocletian’s Palace. Originally Diocletian’s mausoleum, this stunning structure was designed by Filotas and consecrated in the 7th century.; Dating from the 15th century, the People’s Square (Narodni Trg Pjaca) in Split features many interesting Renaissance, Venetian, and Gothic buildings constructed through the ages; Rebuilt in the 17th century and enlarged in the 1930s, Split’s Church of St. Dominic (Srebrna Vrata I Sv. Diocletian’s Palace – Its basement also served as a set location for filming the Game of Thrones, resulting in its being one of the attractions for fans of the TV show.

Day 6

Sightseeing – Split – Salona-overnight

Located about 12 kilometers northeast of the town center, the Klis Fortress is well worth a visit and can even be reached by city bus 22, which departs from Split’s local bus station. If you watch Game of Thrones, you may recognize the castle as the City of Meereen.

About eight kilometers north of Split is the old town of Salona (Solin), a popular destination for history buffs. Occupied by Illyrians, Greeks, and finally the Romans, this ancient town holds many historical attractions within its ancient city walls, including its amphitheater, aqueduct, Bishop’s complex, and forum.

Built by the Romans in the second century, the impressive Salona Amphitheater is designed to hold up to 20,000 people at a time and is notable for its underground channels, believed to have been used for staging mock naval battles. The Salona Aqueduct, built in the first century, is an impressive sight that is easily accessible and once carried water from the river Jadro to Split, ending at Diocletian’s Palace.
